This video gives something of the flavour of the event. Dancing and music beginning most days at noon or earlier and continuing non-stop into the small hours of the morning. Age is definitely no barrier — those attending range from 18 to 80, and the older participants are regularly the first up and last to stagger home to bed late at night. The best known of the matchmakers is Willie Daly, who deals in horses when not dealing in love and who claims to have been instrumental in getting hundreds, if not thousands, of couples to the altar.
Do NOT go expecting a sophisticated or upmarket event.

Clare, head to The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival! All that love lust? One lady I met told me she was from Effin Kilmallock. Suffice it to say it is our new favourite place name! Sunday morning dancing at the Hydro Hotel With dancing in several venues from morning until late we were spoiled for choice but the Hydro Hotel on the hill was where we spent the night and had great fun. A great mix of young and old, several bars and live music with DJs, there was something and someone!
A great traditional venue with great staff, we had a mighty night throwing some shapes to Kentucky singer Buck Taylor and his brilliant band and refreshingly, we were never stuck for dance partners. We were up early on Sunday morning as the pubs were full again, with live music and many punters dancing off the hangovers, or working on new ones! Though he was quickly onto the next candidate, so perhaps not!
Did I find love? I was too busy getting flung around the dancefloor to notice to be honest. If you like throwing some shapes, get your dancing shoes on and head on down, you might get lucky. With over 3, marriages under his belt, he certainly seems to know his stuff. Lisdoonvarna, single or not fingers crossed for the latter!

From Heartwrenching to Rowdy! More recently, Margaret Johnson and Mitchell Johnson joined us, really filling out the group’s sound. Margaret adds some wonderful soprano vocals and harmonies and occasional autoharp and Mitchell gives us a much-needed percussion section, mostly in the form of his cajon drum and also adds some guitar and vocals on some songs. And most recently of all, we have added a long-sought-after fiddler in Erika Nagel! We pretty much play whatever we all like and want to play, so it has become a little difficult to classify our band.
We love doing weddings and private events as well. We are always looking for new venues, so if you know of one where you’d like to see us play, let us know!

Lisdoonvarna hosts an annual Matchmakers Festival and draws singles from all over the world. Each year, during the month of September, this small village on the western coast of Ireland offers a quest for the romance holy grail to hordes of lonely souls – the capturing of an Irish heart. Ah, ’tis a prize indeed. Hormones run high during Lisdoonvarna’s month of revelry and the locals grit their teeth while they stoically and sometimes not so stoically endure the debauchery.
If you wish to attend the festival, do make your plans early because accommodations in the village of Lisdoonvarna fill up quickly and you’ll want to be in the mix of things when the activities begin. The Matchmaker Festival is a spectacle to behold. Women and men from all over the world flock to this bedlam in the centre of the haunting Burren to find the charms of an Irishman or the love of an Irish woman.
In disappointment, they then focus their amorous attentions on fellow pilgrims who are, likewise, finding it’s practically impossible to capture the heart of a beautiful Irish girl in Lisdoonvarna Unfortunately, many a lass may turn over a few limestone rocks to find only bog farmers who are overly-sensitive to bathing and these ladies soon discover they have set their sights a bit high.
Some believe any decent match with a real Irish person is better made in the pubs of Ennis or strolling along the beach in Lahinch because no self-respecting Irishman or Irishwoman would ever find himself or herself anywhere near Lisdoonvarna during the month of September. In a way, the Matchmaker Festival resembles a Brigadoon gone terribly terribly wrong.
That said, the festival is still a month-long celebration of love and happiness, and the pleasant village of Lisdoonvarna, located in the centre of the Burren, is well worth the trip at any time of the year.
